Are you scam aware?

20 Aug2020

This week marks National Scam Awareness Week for 2020.

According to the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC), “Scamwatch has seen a 55 per cent increase in reports involving loss of personal information this year compared with the same period in 2019, totalling more than 24,000 reports and over $22 million in losses”.

In support of this year’s theme ‘Be yourself. Don’t let a scammer be you’, the ACCC have created a new This Is Not Your Life podcast that provides an insight into how scammers use new technology to trick people into sharing information that they can use to steal your identity and ways to protect yourself.

To help you protect your from scams, here are the ACCC’s top tips to help your protect your personal information:

  • Don’t be pressured into giving away any personal information by someone who has contacted you, no matter who they say they are.
  • Don’t click on links in unexpected emails or messages, even if it appears to have come from a legitimate source.
  • Use strong passwords for your accounts and internet network, and never share them with others.
  • Install anti-virus software on your devices and keep it up to date.
  • Limit what personal information you share about yourself online, including on social media.
