Group fitness is the key to motivation

Beach yoga

Most of us would admit we’ve all done it. We started the new year with the best of intentions, making that timeless resolution: This year I am going to get fit!

For some, that means getting up in the morning and going for a run or walk, others might shop around for a nearby gym or you might look at some of the fancier fitness gadgets, like a rowing machine or stepper.

And of course we all know what usually happens: Our initial burst of enthusiasm quickly wanes and we run out of motivation.

So you might be interested to know that a recent study has shown that exercising on your own greatly reduces your chances of staying true to your “get fit” pledge.

Published in the Journal of the American Osteopathic Association, the study found that exercising with a group of people actually improves your quality of life more than exercising alone.

Dayna Yorks, one of the study’s lead researchers found that “the communal benefits of coming together with friends and colleagues, and doing something difficult, while encouraging one another, pays dividends beyond exercising alone.”

So, if you’re looking at shedding a few kilos or even just finding a new hobby, grab some buddies and sign up to any one of the many group fitness programs Perth has to offer.

5km park runs

If you fancy the idea of a free weekly 5km run in a park with a group of people, then check out the various locations and times. The runs are free and anyone of any fitness ability is welcome.

Walking groups in Perth

If walking is more appealing, you simply can’t go past the Walking Meetups in Perth website. From a ‘Nordic Walking’ group to women only ‘Walk and Wine’ group – the website includes literally dozens and dozens of groups fitness opportunities in and around Perth that promise socialisation and good conversation.

Over 50s group fitness

Over 50 and want to get in shape? Prime Movers has more than 5000 members and hold 74 classes a week throughout Mandurah and the metropolitan area.

Lunchtime fitness

Instead of consuming that midday ham and cheese croissant at your desk, grab your work colleagues and head to the city for some free lunchtime group fitness classes. Hosted by the City of Perth, the classes are held before and after work, lunchtimes and even on the weekends.

Running calendar 2018

After all those fitness classes, why not try your hand a marathon or half-marathon. WA Marathon Club has jammed-packed calendar full of fun runs and running events for all ages and all levels.
