Supporting local on a budget

Shop local

After a period of staying at home due to COVID-19, it is exciting to see a gradual return to normal and our options for dining out and entertainment opening up again.

While we were limited in what we could do during isolation, many of us have learnt how to enjoy the simple things in life without needing to spend much at all. From enjoying a walk out in nature, finding joy in doing a puzzle or reading a book, we all found ways to keep ourselves busy while staying home.

With restrictions well and truly easing, you’re probably keen to get out and support local businesses as much as possible. So how do you do this while still managing your budget?

Shop local, support small

The good news is, you don’t need to make large purchases to support local retailers. The key is to holiday local and choose local wherever practical to support the economy and the small to medium-size businesses that may have been impacted over recent months.

Here are a few ideas to get you started.

  1. Stop in at a local café for a coffee and bite to eat.
  2. Plan to shop for fresh produce at your local farmer’s market.
  3. Book a haircut – or any other post-isolation maintenance - at a salon near you.
  4. Take a day trip – try the Perth Hills, Fremantle or Rottnest Island for a day out. You’ll find breathtaking scenery, wineries, bushwalks, museums and plenty of small businesses to support – all a short drive from the centre of Perth.
  5. With the relaxing of regional borders, plan your next holiday in WA’s big backyard. Head down south for whale-watching and wine, venture north to Jurien Bay or Cervantes for something fairly close to home, or way north for a new adventure. Whatever your travel style and budget, there is accommodation and activities to suit. If you’re trying to keep costs down, consider camping with friends or family or take a look at Airbnb for a budget friendly accommodation option. Many regional businesses rely on tourism, so it is also an opportunity to show your support for businesses in the region.

Get some holiday inspiration from the Western Australia tourism website.
  6. Visit the Art Gallery of Western Australia. Another great day out the whole family can enjoy without stretching the budget – many of the exhibitions are free. Plan your visit by visiting the Art Gallery of WA's website.

However you choose to support local, work out what your household budget is for entertainment and dining and visit places accordingly. If you need help getting started, get our tips on creating a budget here.
