Tackle these budget friendly family activities

School holidays are just around the corner, and with Christmas in the mix, there’s lots of things to do and see.

We’ve done some researching for free or low-cost activities to keep your family entertained these school holidays.

Christmas events and activities

Christmas Lights Trail in the city

Discover a host of Christmas decorations, projections and displays through the Perth CBD. Plus, visit Santa each Friday and Saturday night.

Cost: Free
Dates: Every day until Sunday 2 January 2022

Harry Potter Christmas at London Court

This is one for the older kids, and maybe a few adults too.Head to London Court in the Perth CBD as it transforms into Diagon Alley and enjoy watching performances from theatrical artists too.

Dates and times: Friday 17 December from 6pm – 8pm, Saturday 18 December from 10am – 12pm

Livelighter Pop-up Christmas Wonderland

Head into Mandurah for a family fun day out, featuring arts and crafts, a creative digital installation for kids to enjoy, and Christmas carols to sign along with.

Drive through the suburbs to explore Christmas light displays

It’s a tradition for many families to explore the amazing light displays set up at houses across WA suburbs. Plot your own trail at, which allows you to search by suburb and set up a map of houses you want to visit. Some locations to get you started are:

Myamba Court, Carramar
Consulate Court, Thornlie
Samson Court, Duncraig

Events in the Perth CBD

There’s plenty of fun, educational and cultural activities to fill a few family day trips in the CBD these holidays.

Perth City Market

This pop-up market showcases some of Perth’s most creative makers. Explore hand-made jewellery, ceramics and art for sale. Plus on Friday nights, the Hawker Markets drop in from 4.30pm, so you can enjoy some street food while you’re there.

WA Museum Boola Bardip

If you haven’t visited since it reopened a little over a year ago, now is the time to explore the WA Museum Boola Bardip. Not only are there various exhibitions, but there are lots of tours such as the WA Dinosaur Family Tour that runs each Sunday from 11.30am from only $5 per person.

Cost: Free, however some exhibitions may charge a fee

Wild West: Animals in the Archives exhibition

The National Archives of Australia is hosting an exhibition highlighting the changing views towards animals and the environment in Australia through archived documents and records from Government Departments.

Cost: Free
Dates: Monday – Friday. The exhibition runs until 25 January 2022.
Time: 9.30am – 4.30pm
Venue: National Archive WA Office

Telethon Kids Institute Discovery Centre

Designed to help kids learn about science, health and research in a fun and interactive way, a visit to the Discovery Centre will have you touring science labs, looking through microscopes, learning about X-rays and much more.

Cost: Free or by donation

Up in the northern suburbs

Hop on the Sunset Coast Explorer

Spend the day beach-hopping in the northern suburbs on the Sunset Coast Explorer. Stopping at Hillarys Boat Harbor, North Beach and Scarborough Beach Pool, you can soak up the best of each location without the hassle of finding a car park.

Date: Saturdays and Sundays

Hillarys Boat Harbour

There are activities for families of all ages at Hillarys Boat Harbour. Older families can enjoy browsing the retail shops or getting a bite to eat at the many cafes, while younger families can spend time at playgrounds, on the pontoon waterslides, playing games at Leisure Zone or learning about sea life at AQWA.

Head out east

The Orchard Perth

Head into the Chittering Valley to pick some Valencia oranges, meet some furry friends at the animal farm or win prizes on a scavenger hunt.

Whiteman Park

A day trip to Whiteman Park gives you access to many family friendly activities, from a mini water playground and community forest, to train rides, bus tours and the much-loved Caversham Wildlife Park.

Cost: Entry to Whiteman Park is free, however some activities include a cost
Date: Daily (however no attractions are operating on Christmas Day)
Times: 8.30am – 6pm (excluding Christmas Day)

In the southern suburbs

Hundreds and Thousands immersive kids colour adventure

Get immersed in colourful experiences with this interactive art exhibition across all galleries at the Fremantle Arts Centre. Plus, there’s a series of free workshops coinciding with the exhibition to extend the fun.

Date: Daily until Sunday 23 January 2022 (Excluding Christmas Day, Boxing Day, New Year’s Day).
Time: 10am – 5pm

Port Coogee Marina

There’s lots to see and do at the Port Coogee Marina. Swim at Ngarkal Beach or head to the water playground. Check out the land-based Coogee Maritime Trail or join the Nyungar Tourist Trail and learn about the history of the region.

Kwinana Adventure Park

Featuring a Splash Pad, maze and a range of play equipment, the Kwinana Adventure Park has so much to offer when it comes to keeping your kids active and entertained.
